Having faith and humility is a great mix…

I am often reminded of the Canaanite woman who chose to eat crumbs in Matthew 15:21-28. Her daughter was ravaged by a demonic oppression, and was suffering terribly. She came to Jesus as her only hope. He in turn had been sent to the Jews as a Branch to save them. He was willing to turn her away because she was not a Jew. And so she gave Him a proposal: I do not have to eat what you feed the Jews, I will stoop low and eat the crumbs that fall of their table.

I wonder if we have that deep conviction now… I wonder how desperate we are for a touch from God… I wonder how compelled we are and needy of Him. There are many fill-ins; many other options to God; it seems. The world of easy living has spoilt us. We are not ready or willing to go through the grind, and wait on the Lord. Only humility and acceptance will enable us to ask and keep asking God until He answers. Our attention span on the Lord cannot be short and flimsy. And we cannot negotiate it either. That woman said I would eat crumbs. I would go on my knees. I would lick the floor! I would do whatever. I would eat the humble pie to receive a touch from you. I must say, God is not looking for you to grovel before He blesses you. However He resists the proud, and loves humility. And so simply saying we have faith is not enough. Having faith starts with humility. I pray we will have both, and so be ever willing to eat crumbs – even though I know God has more than crumbs for us.
