Spiritual oxygen

I love the smell of scented burning candles in the home. Most especially Yankee Candle’s seasonal fragrance jar candles; they can make your home smell almost heavenly. Well, I don’t mean to stretch it, but I love them – the smell of cinnamon, the smell of vanilla etc. And so it is something we do in my home, candles burning for hours – just imbibing the rooms.

And then I switch it off with a stroke simply by capping the jar. You could watch as the light simply dims. Why is this? Because there simply is no oxygen. Nothing to keep it burning. Nothing to keep it lit. Once the oxygen is cut off, life is cut off. Spiritually we are the same. When we are burning for God, we diffuse His aroma in this world according to 2 Corinthians 2:15. Wherever we go, we leave a whiff behind. To those that are already saved, we smell of the death of Christ. We remind ourselves of the work that was done on the cross. We remind ourselves of Christ’s obedience and love for the Father. And to those that do not know Him, do not have Him, who have not given their lives to Him, then we smell of the life they can have.

The thing is we must stay burning. Your wick must burn. If you stop burning, you give the opposite effect to Christ. So how can we stay burning? We need oxygen. I mean spiritual oxygen. What does spiritual oxygen mean? Our spiritual oxygen is all of these: the right heart; faith in God; surrender ourselves to His will; humility; reading the word of God; doing the word of God; loving God; loving others etc. I write etc because there is much more!

What aroma are you giving out there in this world of ours? Are you still burning and smelling like Jesus? It is great to smell of Jesus. 2 Corinthians 2:14 says But thanks be to God, who always parades us triumphantly in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of Him. God wants to parade us triumphantly in Christ to this dying world – telling them they can choose life. But He can only parade someone who is like Him, who smells like Him, who behaves like Him; someone who has His heart.

Lord help me to diffuse You in my life today.
