The afterlife

The afterlife

It is so easy not to think of what happens next. That next abode – heaven or hell. It is in fact pleasant not to think of our afterlife. So easy to ignore what happens when all is said and done here on earth: no career, no school, no boss, no football practice, no air miles to collect, no Christmas party to attend; none! It is so easy to flout what happens next when there is no more life to be lived here, and all that is left is the afterlife.

At such a time, all that will matter is what we have done when we were on earth. What seeds did we sow? Were they righteous or corrupt? What will matter will be this: how did we conduct our lives? Suddenly, we will be in the place of ‘giving an account’according to Romans 14:12. Now due to our daily chores, it seems easy to neglect such a great duty that determines our afterlife. This duty if carried out diligently, will determine everything pertaining to our next life. Unfortunately, we tend to spend such a little time thinking about this now. We spend such a conspicuous amount of our time on spiritually extraneous choices. This reminds me of Matthew 24:37-39 which says But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.

What a shocker it must have been for them. They were eating, drinking, marrying, buying and selling; and yet never prepared for their afterlife! And why? Because to be spiritually aware and spiritually focused on God means we will have to truly change; be obedient; be faithful; be righteous; be true to God; refuse compromise; refuse temptation; refuse to join in worldly acts; be a true believer.

It seems tedious to prepare for eternity. This is the last thing people want to do. They want to enjoy this life; they want to have a skin in the game, and be part of the party. Unfortunately, it is always late when the flood comes. There is nowhere to run after the flood. The saving must be had before the flood, not after the flood. No one noticed when Noah climbed into that ark because they were busy doing ‘life’. However when the flood came, all noticed; but it was too late to change their ways. We must pay attention to our afterlife – before it gets too late.
