The Importance of Picture Books in a Child’s life

Have you ever wondered why children naturally love to move around and touch and feel everything in sight? And sometimes even put things in their mouth?
Children love to explore their surroundings. They are born to be little explorers at heart. They were intricately created by God to quickly learn and absorb everything around them at a very young age by using all their senses. They are like little sponges that quickly absorb everything in sight. They love to explore their environment and are especially drawn to colorful objects. Along with that, they have great imaginations and love interacting with others around them. I believe this is why all children are so drawn to picture books. Children love color and art, and because they use multiple senses to interact, it makes them naturally drawn to picture books.

Picture books also play a key role in helping our children grow. Because children learn by using all of their senses, picture books help them learn and understand quickly and easily. They help children’s
growing minds; not to mention their budding imaginations by engaging multiple senses. As they hear the story being read to them and see the pictures and touch the pictures on the pages; they become fully engaged. That is what makes picture books the perfect tool for teaching children and helping them learn and connect the dots between the words and pictures in a visual way.

And most of all, picture books are wonderful tools to aid parents and child care providers in teaching and engaging with their children in an interactive way. It enables spending quality time talking with their children about the story, the pictures and the words. Interacting with your children, communicating and spending quality time with them is what helps them to really learn. It also promotes family time which is extremely important in a child’s life. All of these are key ingredients to having a healthy, well-balanced child that will grow and flourish.

I began reading picture books to my daughter at a very young age every night before bed. It became a very memorable tradition in our family. I even started looking at family friendly magazines, grocery store flyers and department store ads with her. They were the perfect tools to begin interacting and teaching her about colors, shapes, sizes, objects, numbers, letters, etc. She enjoyed it so much that I even started a fun family game of “I SPY” that we have played for many years.

In the same way, Christian Picture Books are a wonderful tool to begin opening doors in a child’s heart for learning about God and a deeper understanding that will lead to many wonderful, ongoing discussions and a true time of sharing with your children. They are helpful in laying the foundation to easily build upon for children to learn about God and Christianity.

So open up a Children’s picture book and begin exploring and learning with your children and/or grandchildren today. It will be a life-changing experience that will bless them and in turn bless you for many years to come.
