You are God’s Valentine

February is the month of Valentines; love, gifts, cards, flowers, candy, and treats. It’s an exciting time for those in love, and for friends and family. But, it can also be a sad and difficult time for those, that perhaps have lost their love, or feel alone and lonely. As they look at everyone celebrating it can be a challenge.

I want to share with those who may have a hard time this month—how this holiday, which I honestly dreaded and detested for years—one year changed for me. That year, as the dreaded holiday was approaching; I found myself making sarcastic cracks about the event. I stopped and listened to myself and didn’t like how I felt. I am pretty sure others didn’t like my attitude either. I needed to get over this bother. What was it that was bothering me so much? It had to be more than just being alone or having had, in my case a long ago; my heart broken.

So I thought about this question: “What is Valentine’s Day about really”? It’s about having someone in your life that will let you know you are their “Special One”. You are the one that lights their world. On that day you are the one they give gifts to, because to them—no one else is special like you. This was what was bothering me. I wasn’t anyone’s “special one.”

At this point I was feeling pretty down. I was a single mom, with grown children, who had families and their own “special ones,” who would be showered with gifts. Childish as I felt…I longed for that. So, I went to the Lord, and poured out my complaint. I knew He loved me and looked up all the scriptures on His love for me. But, then, I went a step further, and said, “I know you love me, Lord, but please forgive me for being selfish here. You love everyone, you died for all of us, I’m nothing special.” That’s when I felt Him say in my heart, “I didn’t have to create you. I chose to create you. I designed everything about you, special, completely unique, one of a kind.”

Here on earth we find someone already made, and we choose them to be our “special one,” but the Lord created us for His joy, making us more special to His heart then we could ever be to anyone here on earth. He didn’t choose someone already designed, He designed us Himself; with love. He wanted us to be born. He wanted us to be who we are. He has a plan and a purpose for us, He loves us completely and absolutely.

So, this Valentines month I hope you can embrace in your heart how special you are to God, how unique you are. You were created in love, for a special purpose on this earth. If the purpose is only to give God pleasure that you exist, then that’s pretty special. Happy Valentine’s Day.
