Authority and Submission

These two words sound like they should have an anathema towards each other. In the natural sense, they should, because one stands tall and the other bows low. One wants to fill the room, the other wants others to fill the room. One wants to be seen, the other wants others to be seen. One knows it has power and looks for every reason to use it, the other knows it has power, but does not desire to use it. And so these two words are polar opposites, and we see ourselves in these words. We see our reflection. We see Jesus in these words. We see Him, the Lion, and we see Him, the Lamb. We see Him the Savior, needing to be saved.

And so should you reflect on your own act of authority and submission. Do you have both? Do you prefer one to the other? Most people prefer the authority, but not the submission. The authority is such an elevation; the submission is an abasement. Many Christians struggle with submission – it is a dirty word. And many frown upon it as an act of weakness or robbery. But not Jesus. Who said in Luke 22:42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.”

Many of us will never rise to where God has intended us to rise up to; if we fail where submission is concerned. There was no Christ, except His will became what God wanted. When we come with our pre-conceived will, and do not submit – we truly are not able to do God’s will. We will learn well if our authority is twinned with submission.

We lie to ourselves when we think we can walk only in authority, and without the submission. Submission is humility. Submission is powerful; after submission comes a breakthrough in further authority. Philippians 2:8-11 says And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

If we fail or refuse to submit ourselves to God and His word, we can never be exalted.
