Fruitful lives

We all want to be fruitful. We want to work hard and have crops when all is said and done. We want to work hard and at the end of month get a pay check! In Matthew 13:3-9 Jesus talks to His followers about having fruitful lives. He noted that there are 4 pathways in life regarding being a Christian. It all starts with hearing the word of God, and then what you do with the word you have heard.

The first life pathway Jesus spoke of was to hear the word of God and do nothing with it; yes, just sit on what you have heard. Not tend to it; not dwell on it – just forget about it. In time birds and cares of life will devour what you have received. The second path is the word of God coming to you, and falling amongst thorns. And what are the thorns? Maybe friends you hang around with who do not love God. They will be thorns when you allow them to consume you. This is a danger, because in time, what you have received will be choked out by their demands on your life. The third pathway is when the word falls on stony ground. This reflects that your heart is not soft enough to receive. This has nothing to do with someone else; it is entirely due to the state of your heart. No one takes the responsibility for your heart but you yourself. We must condition our hearts to be supple and receptive to receive the teaching of the Gospel. This is a must if we will ever be fruitful. I have met many Christians whose hearts fail to receive the word of God and whose lives are because of this fruitless. The fourth pathway is when your heart is deemed ‘good soil’. You are ready and willing to receive the word of God. You are soft, supple and pliable by God. You are not only receiving it, you are obedient to it. Such a heart, will birth fruit. Matthew 13:8 promises you a 100 fold, sixty fold or thirty fold harvest! You must be increasing because of your obedience. That is what a fruitful life means!
