Human Editing
I read an article on New York Times written by Amy Harmon about how scientists are doctoring calves, to remove their natural ability to grow horns. So how do they do it? Well some scientists in a lab have the cell of a calf in a petri-dish. Then they decide to remove the gene that would produce a horn in a bull, and they substitute in its place the gene of an Angus Beef; which naturally does not grow horns. This is desirable for farmers because of the injuries that having horns could cause; this also frees them from eventually ‘dehorning’ the animal. This freedom is being applied to other areas also. The salmon that you eat could have started its life in a petri-dish. There are some people who want to adopt a child and would just not adopt any child. They want to have every influence; God’s influence is not enough. They want to doctor the child’s eyes; the child’s skin color; the child’s intellect; the child’s health. Everything must be according to their selfish ambitions.
Man sees that he does not have to wait or suffer for anything now. And so humans are inflicting such dominance in their dominion over earth. Whatever we do not like; cut it out. Whatever will impact the bottom-line, get rid of it. Whatever will cost us; doctor it out. A bit like taking a picture and doctoring it with Photoshop! They are using a tool to remove every blemish, spot and wrinkle. According to the Bible, it is the blood of Jesus that has to be applied that removes the blemish, spot and wrinkle. It seems such a process is too long-winded. Such a process takes too long; it takes obedience; it takes being faithful; it takes yielding to God.
I pray that you do not doctor your life. I pray that you allow God to do the building in your life. It is quick and almost cost-less to swap things in and out; it is easy to place a part of your life in a petri-dish and make it what you want it to be. What a petri-dish could achieve in a simple swap of genes might not be achievable in a decade. And yet the process of working to achieve in the natural way, creates opportunities to learn, to toil, to appreciate, to be changed in the heart, even! Wow! What a great fruit that would be if through the un-doctored process, our hearts become changed according to God’s will. The value many feel they receive from taking short-cuts and doctoring cannot be compared to the value that we will receive because of the fruits that God’s will puts in our hearts.
