The best way to beat the devil is to be holy…

I was watching Golden State Warriors play against Utah in a basketball game last night. During the game in the 4th quarter a Utah player Rudy Gobert pushed at Kevin Durant. Durant shoved back, and yet it was Kevin that was lumbered with a flagrant foul. I must say I did not understand the rules one bit. I felt it wasn’t just But what do I know? I follow my sons along. I root for their team; I clap when they clap; shout when they shout, and slump when they do.

I like Golden State Warriors. I follow them closely. I know all their players’ names.

That incident with Durant got me thinking; the only way to win against your opponent is when you really win. The only way for us to beat the devil is by living holy lives. And so when he pushes at us, and kicks at us and lies about us; what do we do? How do we fight back? How do we clear our name? The best way to do this is not to kick and shove back. It is not to shout the loudest. It is not certainly to become like him.

No, the best way to beat the devil at his game is to live holy lives. The best way to win in a game where all the rules are bent against you is to do the right thing. And yes, Golden State went on to win 102 – 91. We must not succumb to his ways and still feel we are beating him. His ways are cheating, lying, strife, pure sinfulness. He wins when we succumb to such; and do not repent. He wins when our hearts are far away from God. He knows when we fake our Christianity. He wins when we have a form of godliness but deny God’s power to change us. And so he has managed to win in many people’s lives because the only way to beat him is when we are truly living holy lives. And we know that God will help us to be holy if we ask Him.
