The danger of disappointment
Disappointment will come. The only way you will be immune is if you are not living. If you are, disappointment will come. Life is such, it does not always work out the way we had thought. Yes we have pains. We thought we had dotted the ‘I’ and crossed the ‘T’. We worked so hard. Life throws a curve-ball. How unfortunate it is when we are disappointed. How painful when we feel the sting of failure. Life is not fair. Yes, you are mad. Very angry. You have a right to be disappointed. Now so what?
We must be careful of disappointment. We must pay attention so it does not weigh us down and drain us. We must pay attention to ourselves so we do not get hopeless. Disappointment if so heavy, can lead to hopelessness. It can lead to loss of joy. It can lead to the end of looking forward with expectation and trust. I implore you to pay attention to your loved ones who might be going through some disappointment; even young children. They might not pay attention either. They might think the flux they are in will pass. So what if it does not pass all because they have successfully dug their heels into their disappointment. Are they to stay in such a dangerous place? And let disappointment affect their mental state, physical heath and their future? No!
You see disappointment needs to be processed. The disappointed have to take a good look and see that the disappointment is just an instance: it is not a final. Whatever we go through are just instances in our lives. They are happenings. They do not have the final say. Only God has the final say. Only God has seen the final script. Only God. And so an instance is simply that – just a snapshot. It does not capture the joy and surplus and peace that is yet to come. We must not get disheartened by our instances. And by so doing lose perspective of the victories that are yet to come.
Are you disappointed today? Are you dwelling in that place of rue? Please don’t be fooled. It is just one happening in all the happy, joyous, wonderful happenings that your good God will give you. So chin up and move forward.
