The fireplace

When we give our lives to Christ, something great happens to us. We are forgiven of all of our sins. We are redeemed. We are taken from our old shape, and the blood of Jesus is applied to us by faith. We are cleaned out! No more the same.

Is that all? No. Not that I cheapen this glorious salvation, since without it we die in our sins. However a fireplace is placed in our hearts also.
Someone might ask, ‘What do you mean, a fireplace?’ I mean exactly that. Most of the homes we have owned have had fireplaces. I love a home that has this feature. You can instantly warm a room; cozy up and feel a closeness and presence. You can sit and watch the fire glow, and glow and glow. And if the fireplace has wood as its fuel, you will hear the wood crackle as it burns. You will see the ambers glow as the fire takes hold. And after the fact, you will see the ashes. These you will clear away as you make room for new wood that will burn again. Your desire is to see the fireplace switched on.

When we give our lives to Christ, we receive salvation and what I call a fireplace in our hearts. This fireplace is the Holy Spirit. A fireplace can either be set alight or kept off. When people turns their hearts purposely to God He sets the fireplace alight. And the more we clear out the ashes and fuel it with fresh wood which is hunger for God, desperation for His presence, spending time reading the word of God – then the fire burns. It warms you up, bringing comfort: the glow of God; the confidence and the presence of God to you.

You need the fire. You need to light up the fireplace. Just imagine that glow happening all within you. Just imagine the presence of God inhabiting your being. We don’t want a fireplace that is cold and out. We want a fireplace that is burning with ambers glowing and the crackling of wood that says we are His living sacrifice. What a life that would be!
