The three gifts

I am reminded of Matthew 2:10-11 when the three wise men were in search of Jesus the King. They were led by the star to a stable. There they saw Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manger. They bowed down and worshiped Him and then opened their treasures and presented Him with these specific gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.

You wonder about the significance of these gifts?

The gold was to emphasize the fact that though He looked humble, though born of a virgin called Mary, though there was no room in the inn – yet this could not negate the fact that He was a King. He was the Son of God. Heaven knew and the world would find out soon.

The frankincense is a common type of essential oil which offers a variety of health benefits, including relieving chronic stress and anxiety, reducing pain, boosting immunity, and even fighting cancer. The frankincense signified His anointing as priest and His ability to bring healing to our body, soul and spirit.

The myrrh was a gift that prepared Him for His eventual task, to die for us all.

What prophetic gifts these were, all stating His position and purpose. From birth He knew He was to die and save all creation.

And so the joy at Christmas is not so much in the birth, but in the why He was birthed. And that truth is shrouded in the love of God for us. And so what joy Christmas indeed brings in that it reminds us – that is if we need to be reminded – how much God loves us!
