What does Christmas mean to me?
Christmas is such a welcome time. It puts people in a good mood; a warm, lovey-fuzzy mode. A time when they go out and buy gifts for those they love and spend time with, and even those they cannot stand to be with. It is such a time of raw emotions. A time when you miss those who are no longer around. It is a time when many memories flood back to you, even childhood memories. You remember your first bike, or your first skateboard. You remember your first watch, your first cell phone. These are usually Christmas gifts.
It is a time when a lit Christmas tree makes your heart go; and the wrappings of presents take over such a huge portion of many lives. It is a time when Christians and non Christians just celebrate. For some they are celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ; and for a lot, just simply celebrating.
The lit trees, reindeers, Father Christmas, sledges, eggnog, Christmas parties etc have all taken the attention away from the One who stepped down to save us all. A bit like on the day He was born, not many paid attention either. He stepped down, and there was no room for Him to be born – only a stable was to be found. We are eerily in that same place, where there seems to be no room for Him, but a stable.
Now, the Christmas trees, and the gifts, and the noise of the store registers have taken hold; they are the calling card.
And so I ask myself, ‘What does Christmas mean to you, Linda?’
It means that at some point many years ago, God had a conversation with His Son. He knew that His creation were like filthy rags, with no way of access to Him. Our sin was great and our ways displeasing. And yet He knew how much we needed Him. And He knew how much He loved us. His love compelled Him. And so He decided that His Son would be the sacrifice. He had to go to earth, become Man, be killed and shed His blood. His blood was so precious. And then whoever believed in Him would have access through His blood. That was the plan! Christmas means this to me. Thank God for the fuzzy feeling. Thank God for the gifts we exchange. Thank God for the Christmas parties. Above all I thank God for Jesus, who though equal to God, became Man to give me access to God.
