Psychological blows

These days we live in have made evil common place; I mean the violence of mass shootings; the carnage of terrorism; the news of planes falling out of the skies, or just simply disappearing; the news of the Zika virus – where children are being born with smaller heads in proportion to their bodies. Yes, the other day a child was taken away by an alligator. The swath of evil and bad news is a common thing. In fact too common, that I am starting to believe that is is leaving some lasting effect on the young.
Our children are well aware of these evil reports.

The other day I wondered about the younger kids, and what they think of the world we live in. I wondered about the psychological blows of these almost daily occurrences; and their impact on them. I wondered if they felt panic, dread or else, when they see or hear the breaking news of another evil report. I have come to the conclusion that there must be such a level of anxiety in this young generation; even a deeper level of fear, capitulation and unsettlement. Not only have they seen so much of these senseless and evil happenings, they are coming to expect it now. I believe they must also feel that there is nothing that can be done to stop this impending catastrophic act that would come, and be greater than the last. Unfortunately these happenings are usually more deadly than the last; the gunmen are more determined than the last; the bombs more sophisticated; the effects of drugs more ravaging.

I feel for our children. I pray for them that when evil happens again that the love of God that is in them and for them – will insulate them. I pray for God’s love to insulate them within and without. Yes, and when those crazy happening take place, I pray that our kids do not jolt; or even worse, accept them as though they are the norm; as though that is the acceptable way and there is nothing that can be done about it. I pray that they do not accept defeat in the face of such intense barbaric evil. I pray that they will get angry with it and not shrug and just move on. I pray that our kids will be angrier with sin than we have been. They would want to see a change. They will bring about a change. They will go on their knees and have a culture of praying and seeking God. They will cry out, even though many of their parents have stayed silent. I pray they will not be frightened by what they see, but that they will take the authority that God has given them and use it in the face of such intense attacks.
