Haiti

I read Jesselyn Cook’s article in World Post about Haiti. Hurricane Matthew has come and gone, and left behind a whole load of carnage behind in Haiti. Remember that Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. It was hit with a magnitude 7 earthquake in 2010. This caused a flurry of aftershocks which eventually claimed some 316000 lives, and left about 300,000 injured. Over time about 1.5 million people have been displaced.

As though that was not enough, Hurricane Matthew has now dealt an even greater blow, as if that was even possible. It ripped in with wind speeds of 145mph. It left a deadly trail of destruction, torn down buildings, acceleration of the Cholera epidemic, and chronic shortages of food and water: such that when aid eventually reaches the people, you see these ravaged recipients fighting and jostling to get what they can get.

The picture above captures Haiti’s pain: a young girl washing herself seated in the midst of rubble in front of a damaged building. I cannot imagine what pain there is in Haiti. I however encourage you Jewel’s reader to have empathy in this time, and ask God what He might have you do for Haiti. Look for a good organization that provides aid to Haiti, and send some money if you can. American Red Cross has efforts to Haiti that you can tap into. Above all, pray for Haiti. God will bless you as you become the hand and feet of God.
