Satan always minimizes the power of sin

In Genesis 2, the serpent comes to Eve and asks her about what the Lord had instructed them regarding eating food in the garden. The serpent said: “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” If you remember, prior to this encounter, God had instructed Adam as such in Genesis 2: 6 : “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

When God instructs, the instruction is settled. You cannot dice it, half it, third it, or pretend you did not hear Him. However it is so like the devil to stir the pot, and bring unsettlement to God’s instruction if we allow him. He is a weasel! He always prompts us to question the authenticity of God’s instruction. He plants doubt. He plants worry. He plants a lie. He said to Eve, “Did God really say…?’ He opened a door for doubt. ‘Did God say or not?’ Have you ever told yourself that? You know that God asked you to do something, and then the enemy comes and says, ‘Did God really ask you to do this?’ Now if you are not careful, you might say, “Hmmm…. I really am not sure.’

I want you to pay attention to what he said next in Genesis 3: 4-5 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

What did he do there? He minimized what sin could do: ‘You will not surely die.’ He kept Eve’s eyes on the physical, and He minimized the death of the closeness she and Adam enjoyed with God. The enemy of your soul is still doing this today. He is minimizing the power of sin and its adverse impact on our lives. He is lying, telling us it is not so bad. If we fall for him like Eve did, we also will lose the close treasured relationship we could indeed have with God. We will be relegated to a distant relationship – all because we allowed Satan to minimize what sin can do.

I encourage you to do all you can to maintain the closeness you have to God. And if you do not have it right now, then I encourage you to covet it and pray for it. If it is the case that you have something in your life that can be likened to an apple – and it is the root of the distance between you and God – then you have to let it go! Nothing on the face of this earth is worth you not having a close relationship with God.
