Making an impact
One of the most powerful aspects to being alive today is being able to bring about a change in other people’s lives. Impact means bringing about, a positive change to a situation or trajectory such that if a person were going the wrong way, they become capable of finding a much better way. Imagine a truant child in school, with no understanding or foundation regarding the importance of education, if such a child were to get help from a person who will steer them the right way, then the chances are the child’ live will change, invariably, his future.
Most times the opportunity to make such an impact is out of the realm of our comfort zone. We have to almost look for these instances when our lives will make the most impact/make a difference. A bit like going on a missionary trip, feeding the poor in your neighborhood, encouraging a child to learn and stay in school, hosting a meeting for young teenage mothers.
These are noble actions that give our lives meaning. Jesus taught us this concept in Mark 1 when He called Levi the tax collector. He did not only interact with a tax collector, a profession the pharisees deemed for sinners and scoundrels, the bottom of society; Jesus went to Levi’s home and ate with him and a bunch of his colleagues from work. All sinners and scoundrels. Jesus sat comfortably with them as those of the establishment (Pharisees) fumed at him for breaking their self-imposed protocol. He ate with them, drank with them and laughed with them. The established loudly complained that He Jesus was keeping company with sinners. Jesus taught them that this was how to make and bring the change. Most of us stay with our own kind, people who think like us and look like us. We stay with people who agree with our political views. We cannot see beyond this into the potential of change that we have been destined to bring to others who will not join our inner-circle. And so because we limit our potential we never reach our potential.
So what does God want of us? Jesus is our example. He went out of His comfort zone. Another individual was Paul. The greatest impact he made was with the gentiles. He could not make such impact among the Jews. Same with us, whatever race you are, look to go outside the line of your race, economic boundary, religious boundary, and bring about a change. You will be surprised how much impact your life will make in the most unexpected way.
