Seize, hold fast and retain

This is the instruction from Hebrew 10:22 which says ‘So let us seize and hold fast and retain without wavering the hope we cherish and confess and our acknowledgement of it, for He who promised is reliable (sure) and faithful to His word’.

There is so much in this scripture, but I want to take you through it step by step to help you grab hold of God’s word and stay holding on to it.

The first part of that scripture says you should seize. What does seize mean? It means use authority and take it. If you do not take it you do not have it. You have to perform the action. You have to take hold of the word of God. And even when you seize it, you have to hold fast. That means hold on tight, because situations will come that will want to snatch the promise out of your hand. You must be strong and hold on with your entire being to the promise of God. At the end you must retain the promise. What a shame if we have gone through all the suffering, and then we lose the promise!

How do we hold on to the promise? We have to have an unwavering hope in the promise of God that it is sure and settled. Someone might say, ‘You don’t know how it is, my marriage is not working; I have been waiting for 10 years. My children need deliverance. My daughter needs a breakthrough. My finances are not healthy’. Yes, I know. But none of these circumstances undo the promises of God to you. You have to still seize, hold fast and retain the promise. We cannot allow these things we face or go through to have the victory over us, such that we fail to cherish God’s promise in our lives.

I have learnt to cherish the promises of God. I remind myself of His promises and meditate on them everyday. I refuse for His promises to me to be a distant thing. They must be near me, so near that I see them. I must acknowledge them, because He who promised me is reliable. This means I can rely on God for everything, regardless of how difficult the situation might be. When you rely on something, you take the entire weight off you and put it on this thing that you are relying on. In this instance, put it on God. God is faithful to accomplish His promise in our lives.

Amen.
