Exhaust the devil today
The devil had gone into the wilderness in Luke 5 hoping to wear Jesus out. Jesus was already tired and hungry in the natural sense. When best to play a trick? Yes, when your opponent is unaware and disheveled. When they are weak. When they are unaware. Well, so the devil had thought.
And so on the three occasions, he pushed those buttons that usually create a door for compromise in our lives: when there is pressure on our comfort ability, e.g. lack of money, needing good stylish clothing, eating at the best restaurants with our friends, driving a desirable car, being able to afford what we want, rising up the career ladder at any cost, wanting to have a good time regardless of where and what it entails, needing to fit in with others etc.
Another door of compromise he tried to open is the human being’s deep need to have control and power. He offered Jesus power and control. He forgot Jesus had all the power there is. However because Jesus was weak in the flesh, he had thought Jesus would gravitate towards his power. He does this to many of us, especially when we want power and control without maturing or going through for it. There is no point giving an immature person power and control – they will misuse it.
Thirdly, he went there! He asked Jesus to tempt God. Many people continue to do what is displeasing to God, and when they get in trouble call on the name of the Father to save them. Jesus refused to bait God. We must not bait God either! If you know that what you are about to do will displease God or go against His word, then don’t do it.
And so after trying all his tricks, he was exhausted, such that he wriggled along like the loser he is. I pray that you will exhaust him today as he tries to play his cheap tricks on you.
